Street parties are popular among young and brave people who are not threaten by low temperatures. Don’t forget to wear very warm clothes, this night’s temperature is going to be below zero. New Years Eve street parties will be held at:

  • Vörösmarty Square, where local and international artists get the party started from December 30th until January 1st.On Monday 30th, the party starts at 5:00 pm. Besides local and international bands, there will be lights and laser shows. To get there, take the Yellow Metro Line 1 (M1)
  • Nyugati Square, where great pop-rock bands will perform the entire night. At midnight of December 31st there will be fireworks and the traditional new years eve concert and street ball. To get there, take Trams 4 or 6.
  • In Oktogon Party all night long with popular Hungarian DJ’s. To get there, take trams 4 or 6.

Additionally, attractive fireworks will be displayed from the Danube River bank (Duna Corzo) on the Pest side near the Chain bridge.

Most Hungarians eat lentils on New Year’s Day since lentils symbolize wealth, so eating lentils on the first day of the new year will bring you fortune all year round.

Public Transport on New Years Eve in Budapest

On New Years Eve, public transport operates normally, including all night buses routes,with the exception of trams 4 and 6 which will operate until 1 am. On January 1st, metro lines will start operating at 4:30 am.

Stores – Opening Hours

Supermarkets, department stores, grocery stores and in general any kind of shop will stay open until 4:00 pm, some might close earlier, so think about what you need for New Year’s Eve and for January first and stock up.

On January 1st cinemas and restaurants are allowed to open to public, shops will remain close. Some Budapest attractions will be open as well:

-Westend Shopping Mall Ice rink terrace. 8:00 am – 10:00 pm.

-Museum of Fine Arts. 8:00 am – 6:00 pm.

-Matthias Church. At 1:00 pm and at 5:00 pm.

-Buda Castle Labyrinth. 12:00 – 7:30 pm.

-Budapest Zoo. 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

On January 2nd, life comes back to normal and all businesses work on regular schedule.
