Gluten Free in Budapest

Gluten Free in Budapest

by P Jones

I am on a gluten free diet due to being coeliac and would like to know how to identify suitable food items when visiting Budapest. Are there appropriate traditional Hungarian dishes that I can enjoy?

Thank you.

There are just a few places where you can enjoy Gluten free meals in Budapest.

Below you can find the list of places and links to their sites. All these places take part in a project managed by the Hungarian Coeliac society called “Restaurant Project”.

It might be helpful for you to know that gluten free translates “Gluten mentes” in Hungarian language. Let the waiter know that you would like to eat gluten free, then they will kindly explain to you the possibilities.

Fonograf Svábhegyi Vendéglő is a restaurant that offers a great variety of Gluten free main courses including Hungarian specialties, pizzas, international food and deserts.

Due Fratelli Étterem is a very cozy italian restaurant located not too far from Margaret bridge. I have been there and I can tell you that their food is delicious. It is located on Erőd utca 9. Budapest 1027.

Etna Pizza is a home delivery pizza shop with a great variety of Gluten free pizzas.

Napfényes Étterem is a vegetarian restaurant that serves traditional Hungarian meals among a nice variety of vegan dishes. Although, they don’t have any Gluten free meal listed on their menu, they said to me they can make gluten free dishes upon request, so it can be a good alternative if you are around Andrassy Boulevard. It is located on Rózsa utca 39. Budapest 1077.
Opening Hours: M-S 12.00 – 10.30 pm.

There is a Coeliac society in Hungary, you might want to contact them if you need more specific information. Check their website, although, most of the information is in Hungarian language, if you write to them in English they will reply the same way.

I wish you have a wonderful time in Budapest and please let us know how was your experience in these restaurants.

Kind regards,

Olga.
